After certification: what the annual surveillance audit changes

Achieving ISO certification is a major milestone, but it is not the finish line: the certificate is issued for a three-year cycle, punctuated by annual surveillance audits. What these audits actually check, and how the organisation prepares for them, determines whether certification is genuinely maintained.

The certificate is not an endpoint, but a cycle

The ISO certificate is valid for three years. During this cycle, the certification body carries out a surveillance audit in year 1 and year 2, followed by a renewal audit in year 3 before expiry. These surveillance audits do not simply repeat the initial audit: they verify that the system continues to be alive, applied and evolving — not just that it existed on the day of certification.

What the auditor actually checks during surveillance

The auditor examines how non-conformities raised during the previous audit were actually resolved, whether corrective actions were genuinely implemented, whether management reviews were held, whether indicators have been monitored over time, ongoing team training, and any changes within the organisation — a new site, a new process, new higher-risk equipment. A system that has not moved since the initial audit is often the first warning sign.

The risk of post-certification complacency

Once the certificate is obtained, vigilance tends to drop: the documented system is used less, indicators are monitored less closely, and ongoing training takes a back seat. These gaps quietly accumulate and, in the event of an unfavourable surveillance audit, can lead to major non-conformities or even suspension of the certificate.
