Becoming a fire safety officer (SSIAP) in Benin: the complete guide
The roles of fire safety officer (SSIAP 1, 2 and 3), private security agent and airport security agent are in high demand but still rarely trained in Benin. Here are the pathways, prerequisites and career prospects.
The safety of public buildings (ERP), industrial sites and infrastructure relies on trained professionals: fire safety officers, private security agents and security agents. In Benin and the sub-region, these pathways remain rare while demand is booming with the rise of shopping centres, hotels, banks and industry.
The SSIAP pathway: 3 levels
SSIAP has three levels: SSIAP 1 (officer) handles patrols, upkeep of fire equipment and assistance to people; SSIAP 2 (team leader) manages the team and runs the security control room; SSIAP 3 (department manager) leads the facility’s fire safety, its budget and advice to management.
The prerequisites to know
Access to SSIAP 1 requires a valid first-aid certificate (SST or PSC1) and medical fitness. SSIAP 2 requires SSIAP 1 and officer experience; SSIAP 3 requires a high-school level or SSIAP 2 with three years’ experience. Each level requires regular refreshers to maintain the qualification.
Beyond fire safety: security and airport
IFECARM GROUP also trains private security agents, airport security agents (screening of passengers, baggage and cargo to ICAO standards) and port security agents (ISPS code). These skills open career prospects in airports, ports, industrial zones and major events.
