In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Anticipate risks, secure access points and oversee work in confined environments

Two days for the client who has a contractor work in a confined space: anticipating risks, preparing access and supervising work.

Key challenges

  • The client knows the space and the contractor knows the trade: the accident arises from what each believes the other knows.
  • The lowest bidder may cut ventilation, attendants or rescue equipment: the specification must make them non-negotiable.
  • Multi-contractor works create crossed risks in already tight spaces.

Learning objectives

  • List the site’s confined spaces and their specific risks.
  • Write safety requirements into the specification.
  • Prepare and check access, isolation and measurements before entry.
  • Coordinate workers and organise rescue.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Confined space accidents and the client’s responsibilities.
  2. 2Site inventory and risk analysis.
  3. 3Specification, contractor selection and assessment.
  4. 4Prevention plan and work permit.
  5. 5Isolation, lockout, ventilation and gas measurement.
  6. 6Rescue organisation and lessons learned.
