In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Master the various obligations and implement effective waste management

Four and a half days to organise an industrial site’s waste management: sorting, storage, pathways, traceability and source reduction.

Key challenges

  • A wrongly identified waste goes down the wrong pathway: the producer remains responsible until final disposal.
  • Hazardous waste needs storage, labelling and tracking that ordinary flows do not.
  • Disposal cost weighs on margin: source reduction pays better but requires acting on production.

Learning objectives

  • List and characterise the waste the site produces.
  • Tell hazardous from non-hazardous waste and choose the suitable pathway.
  • Organise sorting, storage and traceability.
  • Select and monitor collection and treatment contractors.
  • Build a waste reduction plan.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Waste regulations and the producer’s responsibility.
  2. 2Waste classification and characterisation.
  3. 3Waste hierarchy: prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, disposal.
  4. 4Sorting, internal collection, storage and labelling.
  5. 5Traceability: waste tracking forms, registers.
  6. 6Choosing and auditing contractors.
  7. 7Reduction action plan and indicators.

Target audience

  • Environmental and QHSE managers and industrial site operators

Prerequisites

  • No formal prerequisite; knowledge of the site’s waste streams is useful.

Learning methods

Blended learning: remote input and in-person session, with work on each participant’s site waste.

Learning assessment

Case study and skills review.

Scope of application

The course does not replace waste reporting or site-specific permits. The regulatory framework described is that of France and the European Union; texts applicable in Benin or another country differ and must be checked with the local authority or operator.
