What this course aims to achieve

Cleaning and degassing confined spaces, and associated risks

Three days to clean and gas-free a hydrocarbon tank safely: explosive atmosphere, toxic products, confined space and rescue.

Key challenges

  • The tank combines three lethal risks: explosion, poisoning and asphyxiation. Handling only one is enough to cause the accident.
  • Residues off-gas during cleaning: a tank measured safe at entry can become dangerous again in minutes.
  • Ignition sources (static electricity, tools, lighting) must be excluded in a place where they are easy to forget.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the explosion, toxicity and asphyxiation risks of a hydrocarbon tank.
  • Prepare the job: isolation, draining, gas-freeing, permit.
  • Carry out cleaning with continuous gas measurement and suitable equipment.
  • Organise attendance, rescue and alarm.

  2. 2Framework: confined space, explosive atmosphere, work permit.
  3. 3Draining, isolation and gas-freeing methods.
  4. 4Gas measurement: explosimeter, oxygen, toxics.
  5. 5Suitable equipment, respiratory protection and ignition sources.
  6. 6Cleaning, residue and waste management.
  7. 7Attendance, rescue and scenarios.

  • Workers, attendants and supervisors of tank cleaning and gas-freeing operations

Prerequisites

  • Prior confined space training recommended; medical fitness confirmed at enrolment.

Scope of application

This course awards no authorisation; it does not replace the site work permit or requirements applicable to explosive atmospheres and hydrocarbon waste. The framework described is French; rules applicable in Benin or another country differ and must be checked with the authority or employer.
