In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Training: preventing road risk within your company

A one-day course on occupational road risk, the leading cause of fatal workplace accidents. It covers the four levers a company genuinely controls: journeys, the vehicle, communications and skills.

Key challenges

  • Road risk is the only major occupational risk that materialises away from the company, in a place it does not control. The levers are therefore upstream: organisation and planning.
  • A round planned too tightly produces speeding and phone use at the wheel, with no instruction ever asking for either.
  • The work phone is provided by the company, and the expectation of an immediate reply comes from it: this is a risk the company creates itself.
  • The commute accounts for a significant share of accidents, and companies often consider it beyond their reach when they are the ones setting working hours.

Learning objectives

  • Situate road risk within one's company's accident record
  • Analyse the organisation of journeys as a risk factor
  • Define a policy for managing the fleet and its equipment
  • Set rules for using communications while driving
  • Build a road risk prevention plan and its indicators

Detailed programme

  1. 1Occupational road risk: work-related journeys and commuting, accident record, direct and indirect costs
  2. 2The employer's and the employee's responsibilities while driving
  3. 3The journey lever: whether the trip is needed, planning, alternatives, driving time
  4. 4The vehicle lever: choice, fitness for use, maintenance, loading, driver aids
  5. 5The communications lever: call protocol, messaging, expectations of responsiveness
  6. 6The skills lever: assessment, driver training, inducting new starters
  7. 7Aggravating factors: fatigue, medication, alcohol, drugs, weather conditions
  8. 8Building the prevention plan and monitoring the indicators
