In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Master the risks linked to hot work operations

A tailor-made course on hot work — welding, cutting, grinding — and the hot-work permit that governs it: prior analysis, protective measures, and watchkeeping during and after the job.

Key challenges

  • A smouldering fire can break out hours after the work has finished, once the operative has left and nobody is watching any more. Post-work watchkeeping is the most effective measure and the most neglected.
  • Welding sparks pass through partitions, ducts and floors: the fire often starts in a room nobody inspected.
  • In many companies the hot-work permit is signed in advance and in bulk, which removes precisely what it was meant to provide: analysis of the place and the moment.
  • Work by an outside contractor adds a difficulty: the client knows the site's risks, the contractor knows their process, and neither sees the whole picture.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the processes that generate hot work and the risks that go with them
  • Carry out the prior analysis of a work area
  • Draw up a hot-work permit and keep it alive
  • Put in place the protective measures and firefighting means
  • Organise watchkeeping during and after the work
  • Combine the hot-work permit with the prevention plan when a contractor is involved

Detailed programme

  1. 1Hot-work processes: welding, oxy-fuel cutting, grinding, cutting, heat stripping
  2. 2Ignition mechanisms: sparks, conduction, radiation, smouldering fire
  3. 3Prior analysis: area, materials, penetrations, adjacent rooms, atmosphere
  4. 4The hot-work permit: content, signatories, validity, limits, when it is suspended
  5. 5Protective measures: clearing, protecting materials, sealing penetrations
  6. 6Firefighting means on hand and the person appointed
  7. 7Watchkeeping during and after the work: duration, patrols, thermal checks
  8. 8Outside contractors: prevention plan, induction, how the documents fit together
  9. 9Special cases: explosive atmospheres, confined spaces, roofs

Target audience

  • Operatives carrying out hot work
  • Clients and signatories of hot-work permits
  • Maintenance and works supervisors, watchkeepers
  • Prevention officers and safety managers

Prerequisites

  • No theoretical prerequisites
  • Content and duration set after analysing the processes and sites concerned

Learning methods

Format and duration established to order after analysing the request

On-site delivery possible, on the real areas and processes

A hot-work permit template adapted to the client's organisation

Learning assessment

A prior analysis and hot-work permit drawn up on a real case

Assessment adapted to the format chosen

Scope of application

The hot-work permit is an organisational measure whose form and mandatory status vary by country, type of premises and the site insurer's requirements. The course provides the method; the applicable template and the watchkeeping durations imposed remain to be checked with the insurer and the competent authority. It awards no welding qualification.
