In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Carry out the role of attendant or entrant in the drinking water and wastewater sector

One day to work as attendant or entrant in a confined space in the drinking water and sanitation trades, and sit the CATEC certification.

Key challenges

  • A confined space can kill without warning: oxygen-depleted or toxic-gas air cannot always be seen or smelt, and the improvised rescuer is the second victim.
  • The attendant stays outside and must keep vigilance for hours, never entering to assist.
  • Job pressure pushes to shorten ventilation and gas measurements.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the hazards of a confined space: asphyxiation, poisoning, explosion, drowning.
  • Apply the entry procedure: permit, ventilation, gas measurement.
  • Perform the attendant role and raise the alarm without entering.
  • Use detection and respiratory protection equipment.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Confined spaces: definition, typical accidents, roles of workers.
  2. 2Risk analysis and job preparation.
  3. 3Multi-gas detectors: use and limits.
  4. 4Ventilation, personal protective equipment and escape respirator.
  5. 5Attendant and entrant roles, communication.
  6. 6Actions in case of incident and alerting emergency services.

Target audience

  • Drinking water and sanitation staff who enter or attend confined spaces

Scope of application
