Obtain the SSIAP 1 qualification

The initial training required to work as a fire safety officer in a public-access building or a high-rise building.

Key challenges

  • Provide a credible safety presence in a building open to the public.
  • React correctly in the first minutes of a fire, when everything is decided.
  • Know the building, its technical installations and its evacuation routes.

Learning objectives

  • Prevent fire risks through surveillance and patrols.
  • Raise the alarm and receive emergency services as laid down in the site procedures.
  • Tackle an incipient fire with first-response equipment.
  • Assist occupants and take part in evacuating the building.
  • Operate the security desk and the building's technical safety systems.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Fire and its consequences: ignition, spread, effects on people and buildings.
  2. 2Fire safety and design principles of public-access and high-rise buildings.
  3. 3Technical installations: smoke extraction, detection, alarm, emergency lighting and response equipment.
  4. 4The fire safety officer's role and duties, patrols and alarm verification.
  5. 5Operating the security control room and handling an alarm.
  6. 6Practical intervention and evacuation scenarios.

  • Private security officers moving into fire safety

Prerequisites

  • Medical fitness for the role and up-to-date first aid training.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in French.

Learning methods

Theory alternating with installation visits and practical exercises on live fires and at the security control room.

Learning assessment

Final examination before a panel: written test and a practical patrol and intervention exercise.

Scope of application

The course follows the French SSIAP framework. Applying it in another country requires checking local fire safety requirements for public-access buildings.
