Published on September 16, 2026, the sixth edition of ISO 9001 introduces six concrete changes to how you run your quality system. Transition is possible until September 2029, but knowing where to start is another matter.

What’s Changing with ISO 9001:2026: The 6 Key Points
- Leadership: management must now be able to present evidence of its commitment to ethics and quality culture, rather than stating an intention. How this requirement will be assessed remains to be clarified: certification bodies are expected to refine their expectations during the transition.
- Context: climate now enters the organization’s context analysis, on par with economic or regulatory issues.
- Strategy: risks and opportunities are now addressed separately. An identified opportunity now calls for an explicit action, not just a mention.
- Tools: hardware and software are explicitly tied to the infrastructure that must be controlled. The standard creates no obligation to adopt an ERP or data analytics tool: it asks you to control those on which the quality of your products and services depends.
- Competencies: critical know-how must be identified and its transfer organized, so it no longer depends on a single person.
- Reference guidance: a new, 15-page Annex A accompanies this edition, with interpretive guidance for organizations in transition.
ISO 9001:2026 vs 2015: What Stays the Same
The essentials remain in place: process approach, customer focus, continual improvement, documented evidence. Chapter 8 (operations) changes little. Chapters 9 and 10, however, warrant a targeted review: the internal audit programme and the handling of customer complaints are reworded. The bulk of the transition work is about governance and strategy, but it does not remove the need to check those two procedures.
ISO 9001:2026 Transition: The Deadline Is September 2029
Transition is possible until September 2029, a three-year window from publication. It is still best not to wait until 2028 to start: updating evidence of leadership commitment, context analysis incorporating climate, and critical know-how management takes time to embed.
