In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Prepare and deliver SST sessions

An eight-day programme on delivering and assessing occupational first-aid training within one's own organisation: mastering the referential, building a session, running scenarios, and carrying out certifying assessment.

Key challenges

  • An occupational first-aid trainer carries out certifying assessment: they award a certificate. That is a responsibility of a different order from running an awareness session.
  • Scenarios are the heart of the scheme and the hardest part to build: a badly calibrated scenario assesses nothing, or sets the trainee up to fail.
  • The prevention side of the referential assumes the trainer can read the risks of the company hosting them, not merely teach techniques.

Learning objectives

  • Master the referential of the occupational first-aid scheme
  • Master the first-aid actions and know how to teach them
  • Build a teaching progression that conforms to the referential
  • Design and run accident scenarios
  • Carry out certifying assessment and document the outcome
  • Address the prevention side from the company's real risks

Detailed programme

  1. 1The scheme: those involved, the referential, accreditation, the trainer's obligations
  2. 2The fundamentals of occupational risk prevention as they apply to the scheme
  3. 3Technical command of the referential's first-aid actions
  4. 4Adult learning: objectives, progression, alternation, managing the group
  5. 5Building a session and its materials
  6. 6Designing scenarios: realism, calibration, trainee safety
  7. 7Running and debriefing a scenario
  8. 8Certifying assessment: grids, criteria, traceability, borderline cases
  9. 9The prevention side: reading the risks of the host company
  10. 10Complete sessions delivered by participants and assessed
  11. 11The practical and administrative organisation of a session

Target audience

  • People intended to train occupational first aiders
  • Prevention officers, safety managers, occupational health nurses
  • In-house trainers moving into first aid

Prerequisites

  • Holding a valid occupational first-aider certificate
  • Having completed the scheme's required grounding in occupational risk prevention
  • Exact access conditions confirmed at enrolment

Learning methods

Eight days face-to-face, which may be split across several sessions

Most of the time spent with participants delivering and assessing

The scheme's complete teaching equipment made available

Learning assessment

Delivery assessed against a trainer competence grid

Test on command of the referential and of certifying assessment

Award of the trainer certificate on success

Scope of application

Delivered in accordance with the scheme's national referential. The trainer certificate has a limited validity and requires periodic competence maintenance. Actually practising as a trainer further requires the organisation to hold the accreditation the scheme provides for: the course does not confer it.
