What this course aims to achieve

Application of the APSAD R7 standard and the NF S61-970 and NF S61-932 standards

Five days delivered in Africa on the design and implementation of a fire safety system, applying the APSAD R7 standard and the NF S61-970 and NF S61-932 standards.

Key challenges

A fire safety system is not a set of detectors: it is a matrix of correlations between what is detected and what must be triggered. That matrix is the document badly designed installations do not have.
The choice of detector depends on the fire expected in the room, not on the price per point. A smoke detector in a dusty area gives false alarms until somebody disables it.
Technical acceptance is the only opportunity to verify that each detection triggers the correct safe-guarding action. Skipped, it is only recovered at the first fire.
An installation whose spare parts and maintenance skills are not available locally degrades within a few years to the point of being ineffective.

2System categories and how to choose according to the building and its occupancy
3Zoning: detection zones, safe-guarding zones, alarm zones
4Detectors: smoke, heat, flame, multi-criteria — selection criteria room by room
5Manual call points, sounders and visual devices, and their siting
6Safe-guarding functions: compartmentation, smoke control, equipment shutdown
7The correlation matrix: construction, verification, documentation
8Installation rules: wiring, power supplies, fire resistance of cabling
9Technical acceptance: functional tests, report, outstanding items
10Operation, periodic inspections and maintenance of the installation
11A full case study: designing the system for a supplied building

Design offices, installers and integrators in fire safety in Africa
Engineers and technicians on the design and client side
Technical and maintenance managers of equipped premises
Insurers' prevention officers and inspectors

Prerequisites

Technical training in electrical, electronic or building services engineering
A grounding in fire safety and the ability to read building drawings

Learning methods

Five days face-to-face, delivered in Africa

Practical work on a detection control panel and safe-guarding equipment

A case study on a complete building running throughout

Learning assessment

System design and correlation matrix produced on the case study

Written test on the design and installation rules

Scope of application

Standards taught: APSAD rule R7 for automatic fire detection, NF S61-970 for the installation rules of detection systems and NF S61-932 for those of safe-guarding systems. These standards are French: their application outside France is governed by local safety regulations and by the site insurer's requirements. The course awards neither installer certification nor fire safety system coordinator qualification.
