In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Validate the first 3 skill blocks of the 'Manager du risque incendie en entreprise' pathway

A fourteen-day programme delivered in Africa, validating the first three competence blocks of the enterprise fire risk manager pathway. It covers fire phenomena, building protection and fire safety installations.

Key challenges

  • Fire safety technical standards are European, yet they are applied to buildings and firefighting resources operating under different constraints: response distances, available water pressure, public emergency service response times.
  • A site whose outside emergency services arrive in forty minutes cannot be protected like one where they arrive in ten. Sizing the site's own resources becomes a different exercise.
  • The availability of equipment and of inspection contractors determines the solutions adopted: an installation that cannot be maintained locally is a false investment.

Learning objectives

  • Explain combustion, fire spread and the effects of smoke
  • Analyse a site's fire risk and rank its scenarios
  • Identify passive protection measures and their role in limiting the loss
  • Locate fire safety installations, their function and their limits
  • Size a site's first- and second-response resources
  • Build one's establishment's fire prevention and protection plan

Detailed programme

  1. 1Block 1 — Combustion, fire classes, spread, thermal effects and smoke
  2. 2Block 1 — Fire risk analysis: activities, storage, ignition sources
  3. 3Block 2 — Passive protection: reaction and resistance to fire, compartmentation, doors
  4. 4Block 2 — Natural and mechanical smoke control: principles and sizing
  5. 5Block 2 — Emergency service access, exits and evacuation
  6. 6Block 3 — Fire detection and safe-guarding systems
  7. 7Block 3 — Extinguishing means: extinguishers, hose reels, risers, hydrants
  8. 8Block 3 — Automatic suppression: water, gas, foam — when it is justified
  9. 9Firefighting water requirements and containment of fire water run-off
  10. 10The human arrangements: response teams, instructions, drills, receiving the emergency services
  11. 11Periodic inspections and keeping installations serviceable
  12. 12A project running throughout: a fire plan for each participant's establishment

Target audience

  • Safety and QHSE managers of companies and industries in Africa
  • Engineers and technicians responsible for a site's fire protection
  • Insurers' prevention officers, design offices, installers
  • Site managers undertaking an upgrade programme

Prerequisites

  • Higher technician level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Holding a responsibility connected with a site's fire safety

Learning methods

Fourteen days split into modules, allowing a return to work between sessions

Delivered in Africa, with content adapted to participants' local context

A project carried out on one's own establishment

Practical exercises on live fires and on installations

Learning assessment

Validation block by block

Defence of one's establishment's fire plan

Scope of application

The programme validates the first three blocks of the enterprise fire risk manager pathway; it does not award the full qualification, which requires all blocks to be validated. The technical standards taught are of European origin: their application is governed by the safety regulations and insurance rules of the country where the site is located, which prevail.
