In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Carry out photovoltaic installation inspections in accordance with the APSAD D20 standard

The qualifying module for inspecting a photovoltaic installation under the APSAD D20 standard: DC specifics, risks particular to solar plants and how the inspection is run.

Key challenges

  • Direct current cannot be switched off like alternating current: an array stays live as soon as there is daylight.
  • Faults often sit in connections and junction boxes, which are hard to reach.
  • Undetected heating on a roof can become the start of a fire.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the components of a photovoltaic installation and their failure modes.
  • Carry out an inspection compliant with the APSAD D20 standard.
  • Interpret anomalies specific to photovoltaics.
  • Work safely on an installation that is generating.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Architecture of a photovoltaic installation: modules, strings, inverters, protections.
  2. 2Risks specific to direct current and to working on roofs.
  3. 3Characteristic faults: hot spots, diodes, connectors, soiling.
  4. 4Measurement conditions and the influence of irradiance.
  5. 5APSAD D20 requirements and report writing.
  6. 6Hands-on work on a photovoltaic installation.

Target audience

  • Operators who will inspect photovoltaic installations
  • Inspection body technicians working on solar plants

Prerequisites

  • Prior mastery of infrared thermography applied to electrical installations.
  • Electrical authorisation appropriate to work on photovoltaic installations.

Learning methods

In person: technical input and hands-on work on a real installation.

Learning assessment

Qualifying assessment: a theory test and a practical inspection exercise.

Scope of application

APSAD D20 is a French technical standard for photovoltaic installations. Inspection requirements vary by country, installation type and insurance contract.
