Fundamentals of vibration analysis and data collection

The fundamentals of vibration analysis for condition-based maintenance: understanding what a machine's vibration says, collecting usable measurements and spotting drift.

Key challenges

  • Obtain repeatable measurements, the precondition for any comparison over time.

  • Explain the origin of vibration in rotating machinery.
  • Select measurement points and set up the acquisition chain.
  • Collect usable data and build up a measurement history.
  • Identify the most common faults and raise the alarm appropriately.

  1. 1Vibration basics: amplitude, frequency, phase.
  2. 2Sensors, mounting and the measurement chain.
  3. 3Defining measurement points and collection routes.
  4. 4Common faults: unbalance, misalignment, looseness, bearings.
  5. 5Alarm thresholds, trending and campaign reporting.
  6. 6Hands-on collection exercises on machines.

Prerequisites

  • Practical experience maintaining rotating machinery.
  • A grounding in general mechanics is expected.
