In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Basic knowledge to identify and adopt the right reflexes as the first witness to an accident.

A short module on what to do in the first few minutes as the first witness to an accident: protect, raise the alarm, and the few actions that need no equipment.

Key challenges

  • The first witness decides everything by standing still or by acting. In most accidents, inaction comes not from not knowing what to do but from the fear of doing it wrong.
  • Rushing to a casualty without first removing the danger turns one accident into two: this is the first rule and the most often forgotten.

Learning objectives

  • Protect the casualty and oneself before doing anything else
  • Alert the emergency services with the information they need
  • Recognise a situation that puts life at risk

Detailed programme

  1. 1Protect: identify the danger, remove it or move the casualty away
  2. 2Examine: consciousness, breathing, bleeding
  3. 3Alert: who to call, what to say, what to do next
  4. 4First actions without equipment: waiting position, applying pressure to bleeding

  • Any employee, whatever their role
  • New arrivals, temporary staff, reception staff

Filmed situations and interactive scenarios

Learning assessment

Validation quiz at the end of the module

Scope of application

An awareness module, with no supervised practice. It awards no first-aid certificate and does not allow anyone to be counted as a first aider in the company's emergency arrangements, which requires a practical certifying course.
