In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Acquire the skills to check the validity of, and amend, your construction or fit-out/refit project

Five days to write the safety notice for a public-access building file: describing fire and accessibility provisions completely and consistently.

Key challenges

  • The notice is read by the administration and safety commission: what is not justified is deemed absent.
  • It must remain consistent with plans and other file documents; a contradiction blocks processing.
  • The author must know the safety regulations to know which provisions to describe by type and category.

Learning objectives

  • Determine an establishment’s type and category and the rules that apply.
  • Structure the safety notice and associated documents.
  • Describe provisions with justification: construction, smoke control, evacuation, firefighting means.
  • Link the notice to plans and accessibility.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Public-access fire safety regulations: principles, types, categories.
  2. 2Content and structure of a safety notice.
  3. 3Construction, compartmentation, structures and materials.
  4. 4Evacuation: circulation, widths, emergency exits.
  5. 5Smoke control, emergency lighting, alarm, extinguishing.
  6. 6Accessibility for disabled people.
  7. 7Writing exercise on a file.

Target audience

  • Architects, design offices, operators and public-access project managers

Prerequisites

  • Notions of construction or fire safety useful.

Learning methods

Regulatory input and writing exercises on cases.

Learning assessment

Writing notice extracts on a case.

Scope of application

This course helps write the notice; it does not replace the safety commission’s opinion or the architect’s or operator’s responsibility. The regulatory framework described is French; obligations applicable in Benin or another country differ and must be checked with the local authority or operator.
