In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Respond in the event of a workplace accident and apply your first-aid skills within your company

A one-day introduction to first aid at work: protect, examine, alert, then the first-aid actions most often needed in a workplace accident.

Key challenges

Workplace accidents do not look like textbook cases: the casualty is a colleague, the place is cluttered, and the machine is still running.
The action most often needed is not chest compression but applying pressure to bleeding or placing a casualty in a waiting position — and those are the ones forgotten quickest.
Without internal emergency arrangements, a trained first aider loses time working out who to notify and where the equipment is.

Learning objectives

Protect the accident area and move the casualty away from danger
Examine the casualty and pass on a useful alert
Carry out first-aid actions in the commonest situations
Understand one's place in the company's emergency arrangements

Detailed programme

1Protect: persisting dangers, making the area safe, emergency removal
2Examine: consciousness, breathing, bleeding, complaints
3Alert: numbers, the alert message, internal arrangements
4Bleeding, wounds, burns, foreign bodies
5Unconscious casualty who is breathing, and casualty in cardiac arrest
6Trauma: falls, limbs, back, feeling unwell
7Workplace accident scenarios

Target audience

Employees wanting the basic skills without aiming for a certificate
Newly formed teams, ahead of a certifying course
Lone workers and staff of small organisations

None

Learning methods

One day, most of it spent in scenarios

Manikins, training defibrillator and simulation equipment provided

Learning assessment

Actions assessed in scenarios by the trainer

Scope of application

An introductory course. It does not award the occupational first-aider certificate and does not allow anyone to appear as a certified first aider in the emergency arrangements, which requires the SST course.
