In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Gain a first understanding of fire risk, identify protection measures and discover the regulatory context

Two days of orientation for someone who has to deal with fire safety without coming from that field: the phenomena, the protection measures in a building, and the logic of the regulatory framework.

Key challenges

  • Vocabulary is the first obstacle: detection, alarm, alert, safe-guarding, compartmentation and smoke control mean distinct things that everyday usage confuses.
  • Protecting a building rests first on how it was built, not on its extinguishers. That is the reverse of intuition, and it changes every investment priority.
  • Obligations depend on the building's classification. Without knowing which regime applies, one applies rules that do not apply and misses those that do.

Learning objectives

  • Explain combustion, fire spread and the effects of smoke
  • Identify a building's prevention, protection and firefighting measures
  • Establish one's building's classification and the obligations that follow
  • Distinguish the parties and their roles: operator, inspector, authority, insurer
  • Spot the first gaps to be addressed in one's own establishment

Detailed programme

  1. 1Combustion, fire classes, spread, the effects of smoke and heat
  2. 2Prevention: ignition sources, fire load, hot-work permits
  3. 3Passive protection: reaction and resistance to fire, compartmentation, fire doors
  4. 4Smoke control: natural, mechanical, what it is actually for
  5. 5Detection and safe-guarding: what a fire safety system does
  6. 6Extinguishing means: extinguishers, hose reels, automatic suppression
  7. 7Evacuation: escape routes, exits, occupancy, appointed roles, drills
  8. 8The regulatory framework and the logic behind building classifications
  9. 9Periodic inspections, the safety register and the insurer's role

Target audience

  • People taking on fire safety without prior training in the field
  • QHSE managers, technical services, site managers
  • Property managers, insurers' prevention officers

Prerequisites

  • None

Learning methods

Two days face-to-face, illustrated with real fire losses

A technical visit to fire safety installations

Learning assessment

Validation quiz

Identification of gaps on a supplied building case

Scope of application

An introductory course. Fire safety regulations, building classifications and inspection frequencies vary by country: the course conveys the logic rather than the text applicable to any given building. It awards no inspector or coordinator qualification.
