In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Perform resuscitation using a cardiac defibrillator on a victim in cardiac arrest

A three-and-a-half-hour session, mostly practical, on dealing with cardiac arrest: recognising it, performing chest compressions, and using an automated external defibrillator without waiting for the emergency services.

Key challenges

Survival chances in cardiac arrest fall by roughly ten per cent per minute without defibrillation. The time for the emergency services to arrive is almost always longer than the useful window.
Defibrillators installed in companies are rarely used, not because they are missing but because witnesses dare not take them down, fearing they will harm the casualty.
Effective chest compression is deeper and faster than people imagine, and is exhausting within two minutes: taking turns in pairs has to be learned.

Recognise cardiac arrest
Raise the alarm and have the defibrillator brought without interrupting care
Perform effective chest compressions and take turns
Use an automated external defibrillator safely

5Special cases: water, metal surfaces, pacemakers, children, chest hair
6Practice on a manikin and a training defibrillator

Any employee of an establishment fitted with a defibrillator
Reception, retail, sports and school premises staff
First aiders wanting to revisit the technique

Prerequisites

None
Physical condition compatible with performing compressions at floor level

Learning methods

A 3½-hour session, essentially practical

One manikin and one training defibrillator for no more than two participants

Learning assessment

Complete management of a cardiac arrest assessed in a scenario

Scope of application

Training in the use of an automated external defibrillator. These devices are designed to be used by anyone, including untrained people. The course does not award an occupational first-aider certificate, which belongs to a separate scheme. Obligations to install defibrillators vary by country and by type of premises.
