In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Raise awareness of correct behaviours for a safe evacuation in a healthcare facility

A short evacuation module adapted to healthcare premises, where the instruction "everyone out now" does not apply: patients cannot always be moved, and putting people safe happens first inside the building.

Key challenges

  • A patient on a drip, on oxygen or in an operating theatre cannot be evacuated in three minutes. Putting them safe means horizontal transfer, not going outside.
  • The medical oxygen present in rooms turns an ordinary fire outbreak into an oxidiser-fed fire. Shutting off the supply is one of the first actions.
  • Night staff work with reduced numbers and must decide alone the order in which patients are made safe.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish sheltering in place, horizontal transfer and evacuation outside
  • Apply one's own department's instructions as soon as the alarm sounds
  • Identify the technical actions that come first: medical gases, fire doors

Detailed programme

  1. 1Fire in healthcare premises: smoke, medical oxygen, non-ambulant patients
  2. 2The three levels of making people safe: shelter, horizontal transfer, evacuation
  3. 3First actions: alarm, alert, closing doors, shutting off gases
  4. 4Patient priority order and the transfer equipment available

Target audience

  • Clinical and non-clinical staff of healthcare and social care establishments
  • Service, technical and logistics staff
  • Night staff and temporary workers

Prerequisites

  • None

Learning methods

A 30-minute e-learning module, available remotely

Filmed situations in a patient room, a corridor and a ward

Scope of application

An awareness module. The obligations on drills, staff training and the organisation of safe-guarding arrangements in healthcare premises fall under safety regulations specific to each country and type of establishment. Internal instructions prevail over anything in this module.
