In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Qualifying training to issue Q19 inspection reports

The qualifying pathway to carry out infrared thermography inspections of electrical installations and issue Q19 reports compliant with the APSAD D19 standard.

Key challenges

  • Produce a reliable measurement on a live installation while it is in service.
  • Tell a genuine anomaly from a measurement artefact.
  • Write a report that can be relied upon, and that commits its author.

Learning objectives

  • Master the physics of infrared measurement and the parameters that affect it.
  • Prepare and carry out an inspection campaign on an electrical installation.
  • Interpret thermograms and classify the anomalies detected.
  • Write a Q19 report compliant with the standard.
  • Work safely in the vicinity of live installations.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Thermal radiation, emissivity and measurement parameters.
  2. 2Thermal cameras: settings, limitations and sources of error.
  3. 3Abnormal heating in electrical installations and its causes.
  4. 4APSAD D19 requirements and the scope of the inspection.
  5. 5Safe working near live installations.
  6. 6Anomaly classification and drafting of the Q19 report.
  7. 7Hands-on measurement and interpretation exercises.

Target audience

  • Technicians who will carry out thermographic inspections
  • Staff of inspection bodies and verification organisations

Prerequisites

  • Electrical knowledge matching the installations to be inspected.
  • Electrical authorisation appropriate to the work carried out.

Learning methods

In person: theory alternating with hands-on work on real installations.

Learning assessment

Qualifying assessment: a theory test and a practical inspection and report-writing exercise.

Scope of application

APSAD D19 is a French technical standard; issuing Q19 reports requires a qualification that is kept current. Electrical inspection requirements vary by country and insurance contract.
