What this course aims to achieve

Master thermography measurement techniques

The first module of the thermography pathway: understanding the physics of infrared measurement and producing a usable thermogram.

Key challenges

  • A poorly configured thermal camera produces convincing but wrong images.
  • Emissivity, reflection and the surroundings distort the measurement if ignored.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the principles of thermal radiation and infrared measurement.
  • Configure a thermal camera for the surface and environment being measured.
  • Take a repeatable measurement and document it.
  • Recognise the main sources of error.

  1. 1Thermal radiation and the physical quantities involved.
  2. 2Emissivity, reflected temperature and environmental conditions.
  3. 3Thermal cameras: construction, settings and upkeep.
  4. 4Measurement methodology and documenting the thermogram.
  5. 5Error sources and how to control them.
  6. 6Hands-on measurement exercises.

  • People entering the thermography pathway

Prerequisites

  • No thermography background required.
  • A grounding in general physics makes progress easier.

Learning methods

In person: theory and hands-on work with the thermal camera.

Learning assessment

Assessment through practical measurement exercises.

Scope of application

This module provides a technical foundation. On its own it does not qualify the holder to issue inspection reports under an APSAD standard.
