In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Learn to deliver training on responding to a fire outbreak and evacuation

A five-day programme on delivering first-response and evacuation training in one's own company: mastering the technical content, running live-fire exercises safely, and assessing trainees.

Key challenges

  • Knowing how to use an extinguisher and knowing how to teach it are two separate skills. The second does not follow from the first.
  • An in-house trainer is answerable for their trainees' safety in front of a live fire: that is the part of the job least learned by imitation.
  • Training one's own colleagues rests on fragile authority: an in-house trainer has to hold to an assessment without damaging the working relationship.

Learning objectives

  • Master the technical content of first response and evacuation
  • Build a teaching progression and its materials
  • Deliver a session to a group of adults
  • Organise and supervise live-fire exercises safely
  • Assess trainees' learning and record the outcome
  • Adapt sessions to one's own establishment's risks and layout

Detailed programme

  1. 1Technical revision: combustion, fire classes, extinguishing agents, smoke
  2. 2Firefighting means: extinguishers, hose reels, use and limits
  3. 3Evacuation arrangements: appointed roles, escape routes, assembly point
  4. 4Adult learning: objectives, progression, alternating theory and practice
  5. 5Building a session: materials, duration, pace, managing the group
  6. 6Safety of live-fire exercises: ground, equipment, instructions, incidents
  7. 7Running an evacuation drill with one's trainees
  8. 8Assessment: criteria, grid, traceability, certificate
  9. 9Practice sessions assessed by participants and the trainer
  10. 10Adapting sessions to one's own establishment's context
