In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Use an open-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus (ARI) safely

A three-and-a-half-hour session on using open-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus safely: pre-use checks, donning, managing air supply, and buddy procedures.

Key challenges

  • The duration marked on the cylinder is never the one available: effort, stress and heat cut it by half. Working out one's turn-back reserve is the first skill.
  • A badly fitted mask leaks without the wearer noticing, because the positive pressure hides the leak until they exert themselves.
  • In a smoke-logged atmosphere, orientation is lost within a few metres. All movement is done in pairs and with a means of finding the way back.

Learning objectives

  • Carry out a complete pre-use check of a breathing apparatus set
  • Don and commission the set within the required time
  • Calculate and monitor one's air supply, and decide when to turn back
  • Move in pairs in a degraded atmosphere
  • Apply the emergency procedures: leak, air depletion, a team member in difficulty

Detailed programme

  1. 1Non-respirable atmospheres: smoke, gases, oxygen deficiency
  2. 2The make-up and operation of an open-circuit set
  3. 3Pre-use checks: pressures, tightness, demand valve, low-pressure whistle
  4. 4Donning, mask adjustment and face-seal check
  5. 5Managing air: actual consumption, turn-back reserve, alarm thresholds
  6. 6Movement exercises in pairs, zero visibility and confined space
  7. 7Emergency procedures and care of the set after use

Target audience

  • Response team members required to wear breathing apparatus
  • Maintenance and operations staff in industrial settings
  • Fire safety officers assigned to hazardous sites

Prerequisites

  • A valid medical clearance to wear breathing apparatus
  • Physical condition compatible with carrying a load and exerting oneself

Learning methods

A 3½-hour session, essentially practical

Sets, masks and cylinders provided, with a purpose-built movement course

Learning assessment

Pre-use check and donning assessed in practice

An assessed movement course in pairs

Scope of application

Training in the use of self-contained respiratory protective equipment. Wearing such a set is conditional on medical clearance and periodic practice, the frequency of which is set by the employer. The course does not qualify anyone for interior firefighting, which belongs to the second-response team pathway.
