In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Understand the fire phenomenon and know how to use extinguishers and RIA hose reels to respond to a fire outbreak

A one-day qualifying course for first-response team members: understanding the fire phenomenon, then using extinguishers and hose reels on live fires until both are mastered.

Key challenges

  • The hose reel is a building's most effective means and its least used: it takes two people, the hose must be fully run out, and the valve opened in the right order.
  • A first-response team member is not a firefighter. Their value lies in being already on the spot in the first two minutes, not in the ability to fight a developed fire.
  • A member appointed but never trained since being hired has the title without the skill: the qualification is only maintained by practice.

Learning objectives

  • Explain how a fire starts, develops and spreads
  • Raise the alarm and the alert in accordance with the establishment's instructions
  • Use an appropriate extinguisher on a live fire
  • Deploy a hose reel as a pair
  • Judge the limit of one's intervention and withdraw

  1. 1Combustion, the fire triangle, fire classes and the extinguishing agents that match them
  2. 2How a room fire develops and the role of smoke
  3. 3The establishment's fire safety arrangements: alarm, alert, instructions
  4. 4Extinguishers: types, siting, visual check, operation
  5. 5Hose reels: components, running out, two-person operation, attack technique
  6. 6Live-fire exercises: tray, running fuel, electrical cabinet, gas fire
  7. 7Withdrawal, reporting to management and receiving the outside emergency services

  • Employees appointed as first-response team members
  • Front-line supervisors and on-call staff
  • Maintenance staff, caretakers, reception staff

  • None
  • Physical condition compatible with operating a hose reel

One day, two thirds of it on the fire ground

Extinguishers of every type and a hose reel available

A limited group size to guarantee practice time per participant

Learning assessment

Live-fire extinguishing with extinguisher and hose reel, assessed in practice

Knowledge validation test

Scope of application

A qualifying course for first-response team members. Appointing members and setting the refresher frequency are the employer's responsibility, within the obligations applying in the country and to the type of premises. The course does not qualify anyone for intervention using breathing apparatus, nor for attacking a developed fire.
