In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

In-house first-response training

First-response training delivered on the client's own site, using their extinguishers, hose reels, signage and instructions. Trainees practise in the very premises where they may have to act.

Key challenges

  • An employee trained at a centre knows how to use an extinguisher; trained on their own site, they know where it is. The difference plays out in the first thirty seconds.
  • Every site has its own traps: a store of flammables behind an ordinary-looking door, a hose reel whose hose does not reach around the workstation.
  • On-site training almost always reveals organisational gaps — an out-of-date instruction, a moved extinguisher, an obstructed exit — that off-site training cannot show.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the fire risks specific to one's own establishment
  • Locate the actual firefighting means and escape routes
  • Apply the safety instructions in force on the site
  • Use the first-response equipment present in the premises
  • Report the discrepancies observed during the exercise

Detailed programme

  1. 1Analysis of the site's fire risk: activities, storage, ignition sources
  2. 2A guided tour of the actual firefighting means and escape routes
  3. 3The establishment's instructions: alarm, alert, appointed roles, assembly point
  4. 4Combustion, fire classes, extinguishing agents suited to the site's risks
  5. 5Live-fire extinguishing exercises using the site's own equipment
  6. 6A scenario in the real premises, specific to the activity
  7. 7Reporting to management the organisational gaps observed

Target audience

  • All of an establishment's staff, trained in successive groups
  • The site's appointed first-response team members
  • Sites whose layout or risks cannot be reproduced at a training centre

Prerequisites

  • None
  • An exercise area and the site's instructions made available

Learning methods

One day on the client's premises, successive groups across the day

Flame generator brought by the trainer, refill extinguishers provided

The programme agreed after a preliminary site visit

Learning assessment

Live-fire extinguishing assessed in practice

An on-premises scenario assessed on compliance with the site's instructions

Scope of application

In-house first-response training. It contributes to the employer's duties to inform and train employees on safety, the extent of which varies by country and type of premises. Organisational gaps noted during the session are reported but do not constitute a compliance audit.
