In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Raise awareness of correct safety behaviours

A three-and-a-half-hour session, largely on live fires: understanding how a fire starts, choosing the right extinguisher and using it effectively — or giving up and evacuating.

Key challenges

  • A portable extinguisher gives only about twenty seconds of discharge. Someone who has never used one wastes half of it before reaching the seat of the fire.
  • Water on a cooking-oil fire or on an electrical panel makes the incident worse and injures the person tackling it. Choosing the agent is not a detail.
  • The hardest action to teach is not attacking the fire but deciding to stop: beyond a few dozen seconds, the only right decision is to get out.

Learning objectives

  • Understand how a fire starts and spreads
  • Choose the extinguisher suited to the nature of the fire
  • Use an extinguisher effectively on a live fire
  • Know when to give up and raise the alarm

Detailed programme

  1. 1The fire triangle, fire classes and modes of spread
  2. 2The danger of smoke: opacity, toxicity, temperature
  3. 3Extinguishing agents: water, water with additive, powder, carbon dioxide
  4. 4Alarm and alert: in what order, and to whom
  5. 5Live-fire extinguishing exercises: tray, running fuel, electrical cabinet
  6. 6The limits of intervention and the decision to evacuate

Target audience

  • Any employee liable to respond to a fire outbreak at their workplace
  • Office, workshop, retail and warehouse staff

Prerequisites

  • None

Learning methods

A 3½-hour session, most of it on the fire ground

Extinguishers of every type available, supervised live fires

Flame generator or fire trays depending on the site

Learning assessment

Extinguishing a live fire, assessed on choice of agent and technique

Validation quiz

Scope of application

An awareness session on the use of first-response firefighting equipment. It does not qualify anyone as a first-response team member, nor for work in a smoke-logged atmosphere, which requires self-contained breathing apparatus and dedicated training.
