What this course aims to achieve

Master the requirements of ISO 45001 and conduct internal occupational health and safety audits

Two days on conducting internal occupational health and safety audits. The course starts from the ISO 45001 requirements and focuses on what is hardest to audit: worker participation, hazard identification, and whether control measures are real on the ground.

Key challenges

  • An OH&S system can be compliant on paper and contradicted by the first workshop visited. An internal audit is worth what it goes to see, not what it reads.
  • Worker consultation and participation is the requirement most often satisfied by a set of meeting minutes. Telling real participation from its paper trail requires a method.
  • Auditing safety exposes the internal auditor to a conflict of loyalty: they record failings among colleagues on whom they sometimes depend.

  • Locate the ISO 45001 requirements and the evidence each calls for
  • Prepare an internal OH&S audit oriented towards the field rather than towards documents
  • Audit hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Verify that workers are genuinely consulted and involved
  • Word findings that can be acted on without putting individuals on trial

  3. 3Audit preparation: selecting the work situations to observe
  4. 4Auditing hazard identification and the hierarchy of controls
  5. 5Auditing consultation and participation: which evidence, which interviews
  6. 6Auditing emergency preparedness and incident lessons learned
  7. 7Workstation observation and operator interview: what is permitted, what is useful
  8. 8Writing findings that do not name individuals, and reporting back
  9. 9Role-played field audit on a case study

  • Internal auditors appointed within an OH&S management system
  • Safety coordinators and managers, prevention officers
  • Employee representatives involved in audits

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge of one's own organisation and its occupational risks
  • No audit experience required

Learning methods

Two days face-to-face, with half a day devoted to observing work situations

Audit checklists provided and adapted to participants' sector

Learning assessment

Production of an audit finding assessed on its wording and its evidence

Validation quiz on the requirements of the standard

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: ISO 45001 and ISO 19011. An internal audit is the organisation's own exercise and does not amount to a certification audit. The labour law obligations applicable to the site remain the primary reference; the standard substitutes for none of them.
