In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Lightning, earthquakes, floods... understand these phenomena and identify the key elements for controlling NaTech risks

A five-day programme on natural hazards and NaTech risks — technological accidents triggered by a natural event. The course covers the phenomena themselves, their effects on industrial installations, and the control measures available.

Key challenges

  • A natural hazard strikes the installation, its safeguards and the outside emergency services all at once. Conventional accident scenarios assume the opposite: an isolated failure in an intact environment.
  • Lightning does not destroy only what it strikes: its indirect effects travel along networks and disable controllers hundreds of metres away.
  • Protection against natural hazards is sized on return periods. Choosing the return period is an economic decision that nobody documents.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the physical phenomena behind the main natural hazards
  • Characterise a site's exposure and the return periods adopted
  • Identify the NaTech scenarios specific to an installation
  • Assess how safeguards hold up under natural loading
  • Define the appropriate technical and organisational control measures

Detailed programme

  1. 1Lightning: mechanisms, direct and indirect effects, protection and surge arresters
  2. 2Earthquakes: seismic hazard, structural response, equipment and pipework
  3. 3Flooding and coastal flooding: kinetics, depths, velocities, effects on installations
  4. 4High winds, hail, snow: loading and weak points in the building fabric
  5. 5Drought, clay shrink-swell and effects on buried structures
  6. 6NaTech risks: types of scenario and lessons from past accidents
  7. 7How safeguards hold up under natural loading
  8. 8Return periods, sizing of protections and the economic trade-off
  9. 9Organisational measures: alert, safe shutdown, evacuation, restart
  10. 10Integration into hazard studies and emergency plans
  11. 11Case studies on real installations

Target audience

  • Engineers and HSE managers on industrial sites
  • Hazard study engineers and design office engineers
  • Site managers, technical departments, insurers' prevention officers

Prerequisites

  • Engineering or higher technician level background
  • Knowledge of an industrial installation and its safeguards

Learning methods

Five days face-to-face, one hazard per half-day followed by a NaTech synthesis

Case studies drawn from documented accidents

Learning assessment

A NaTech analysis of an installation, produced and presented to the group

Written test on the phenomena and the control measures

Scope of application

A technical course. The obligations on taking natural hazards into account in hazardous installations vary by country and by the installation's regulatory classification. The course produces neither a hazard study nor a sizing calculation, both of which are engineering work on the real installation.
