In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Raise awareness of the risks associated with operations in ATEX zones

A short module so that anyone entering an ATEX zone understands why the rules are different there, and what they must never do.

Key challenges

  • A harmless gesture — a phone, a dropped spanner — can be enough to ignite an atmosphere.
  • The hazard is invisible: nothing announces an explosive concentration.

Learning objectives

  • Recognise an ATEX zone by its signage.
  • Understand the conditions that make an explosion possible.
  • Adopt permitted behaviours and avoid prohibited actions.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Conditions for an explosion: fuel, oxidiser, ignition source, confinement.
  2. 2Signage and access to ATEX zones.
  3. 3Prohibited behaviours and equipment permitted in the zone.
  4. 4What to do in case of an anomaly or an alarm.

Target audience

  • Any staff who may enter an ATEX zone
  • Visitors and occasional contractors
