In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Basics of safety on hydrogen-using installations

A short module on what makes hydrogen different from other flammable gases, and the precautions that difference demands.

Key challenges

  • Hydrogen ignites across a very wide concentration range and with very little energy.
  • Its flame is barely visible and a leak cannot be smelled.

Learning objectives

  • Know the physical properties and behaviour of hydrogen.
  • Identify the risks specific to hydrogen installations.
  • Adopt the right reflexes in operation and in the event of a leak.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Hydrogen properties: density, explosive range, ignition energy.
  2. 2Behaviour of a leak: dispersion, accumulation at high points.
  3. 3Associated risks: ignition, explosion, material embrittlement.
  4. 4Detection, ventilation and what to do in the event of a leak.

Target audience

  • Staff operating or working on hydrogen installations
  • Site management involved in hydrogen projects

Prerequisites

  • No prerequisites.

Learning methods

Short remote module illustrated with real cases.

Learning assessment

Validation quiz at the end of the module.

Scope of application

Hydrogen installations fall, depending on the case, under ATEX rules, pressure equipment rules and, above certain quantities, classified-installation regimes. Applicable thresholds depend on the country.
