In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Work procedures and authorisations (ATEX work permit)

Training for those who issue and check work permits in ATEX zones: analysing the job before it starts, and refusing it when conditions are not met.

Key challenges

  • A job that is routine elsewhere becomes an ignition source in an ATEX zone.
  • Hold the line against production pressure when conditions are not met.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse the risks of a planned job in an explosive atmosphere.
  • Draw up and issue a work permit suited to the zone concerned.
  • Define compensatory measures and checks before, during and after the work.
  • Supervise outside contractors and verify their authorisation.

Detailed programme

  1. 1Refresher on the explosion mechanism and ATEX zoning.
  2. 2Ignition sources introduced by a job.
  3. 3Prior analysis and compensatory measures: ventilation, gas-freeing, inerting, detection.
  4. 4Work permits, hot work permits and associated lockouts.
  5. 5Supervising the job and the conditions for stopping it.
  6. 6Accepting the work and returning the zone to service.

Target audience

  • Work supervisors and principals in ATEX zones
  • Maintenance managers and production supervisors

Prerequisites

  • Prior knowledge of explosion risk and of the site's zoning.

Learning methods

Regulatory input, analysis of real permits and decision-making scenarios.

Learning assessment

Assessment through intervention case studies and permit drafting.

Scope of application
