What this course aims to achieve

This training is part of the PR-ATEX-REFERENT qualifying pathway ("managing explosion risks")

The zone classification module of the ATEX officer pathway, preparing for the corresponding IECEx competence units.

Key challenges

  • Over-wide zoning is expensive in equipment; too narrow, it leaves people exposed.
  • Justify every zone boundary with traceable reasoning.

Learning objectives

  • Apply protection principles in explosive atmospheres.
  • Identify release sources and characterise the substances involved.
  • Determine the extent and type of each zone.
  • Formalise and justify the classification adopted.

  2. 2Release sources: grades and frequencies.
  3. 3How ventilation affects the extent of the zones.
  4. 4Sizing methods for gases and for dusts.
  5. 5Producing the zoning plan and its justification.
  6. 6Classification exercises on real cases.

Scope of application

Zone classification is an employer obligation under Directive 1999/92/EC. Sizing methods draw on the international standards in force.
