In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Definitions, health and environmental impacts, and implementation of an HSE policy

A one-day course on manufactured nanomaterials: what makes their toxicity different from the same material at ordinary scale, how to assess exposure that escapes the usual measurement methods, and which control measures actually work.

Key challenges

  • The toxicity of a nanomaterial cannot be deduced from that of the bulk material: size, shape and surface state change its biological behaviour at identical composition.
  • Occupational exposure limits are expressed by mass. At the nanometric scale, mass is not the right metric, and most situations have no limit value at all.
  • Nanoparticles are invisible and easily re-suspended: dry cleaning or sweeping recontaminates a workshop believed to have been cleaned.

Learning objectives

  • Define a manufactured nanomaterial and identify occupational exposure situations
  • Understand the toxicity mechanisms specific to the nanometric scale
  • Apply an assessment approach suited to the absence of limit values
  • Choose control and protection measures that are effective at this scale
  • Take in the environmental fate of nanomaterials and the management of nanoscale waste

Detailed programme

  1. 1Definitions, families of nanomaterials and the sectors that use them
  2. 2The properties behind the health effects: size, shape, specific surface area, agglomeration
  3. 3Known effects and remaining uncertainties: respiratory, dermal and digestive routes
  4. 4Exposing situations: weighing, transfer, dispersion, machining composites, cleaning
  5. 5Exposure assessment: available measurement methods, control banding approaches
  6. 6Control: containment, extraction, suitable ventilation, wet cleaning procedures
  7. 7Personal protection: the real effectiveness of filters and gloves at this scale
  8. 8Environmental fate, releases and the waste management route
  9. 9Traceability of exposures and information of employees

Target audience

  • Prevention officers and HSE managers on sites handling nanomaterials
  • Research and development laboratory staff
  • Production managers in chemicals, cosmetics, materials and electronics

Prerequisites

  • A grounding in chemical risk prevention
  • Knowledge of the processes used in one's own establishment

Learning methods

One day face-to-face, with input illustrated by measurement campaign results

A workshop analysing a process brought by participants

Learning assessment

Analysis of a work situation and proposal of control measures

Validation quiz

Scope of application

The course draws on the available recommendations for preventing nanomaterial risks, within a regulatory framework that is still partial and evolving. It does not supply occupational exposure limits where none exist, and is no substitute for an on-site measurement campaign.
