What this course aims to achieve

Chemical risks training: preventing risks related to diisocyanates

A three-and-a-half-hour course on diisocyanates, the compounds found in polyurethane foams, adhesives, paints and varnishes. It addresses the respiratory and skin sensitisation they cause and the conditions for controlled professional use.

Key challenges

  • Diisocyanate sensitisation is irreversible: once occupational asthma has developed, the slightest trace triggers an attack and the employee has to leave the job.
  • Diisocyanates are everywhere without being named: expanding foam, assembly adhesive, two-part varnish. Operators often do not know they are handling them.
  • Spraying and hot work multiply exposure through aerosols and fumes, including for anyone passing nearby.

  • Understand the health effects and the mechanism of sensitisation
  • Apply the control measures suited to the process in use
  • Select the appropriate respiratory and skin protection

  2. 2Health effects: respiratory sensitisation, occupational asthma, skin damage
  3. 3Exposing situations: spraying, pouring, bonding, hot work, sanding
  4. 4Control measures: substitution, closed process, extraction at source, ventilation
  5. 5Personal protection: suitable filters, air-fed equipment, gloves and coveralls
  6. 6Health surveillance and what to do if respiratory symptoms appear

  • Operators using polyurethane foams, adhesives, paints or varnishes
  • Applicators, body repairers, joiners, insulation fitters, maintenance staff
  • Front-line supervisors and prevention officers in the sectors concerned

Identification of the products concerned from a list supplied by the company

Scope of application

Training addressing the requirement for prior training before the industrial or professional use of diisocyanates introduced by Regulation (EU) 2020/1149 amending Annex XVII to the REACH Regulation. It does not remove the need for chemical risk assessment or for the applicable health surveillance.
