In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Identify the main risks, understand the various regulations, and conduct a risk inspection visit

Three days learning to carry out a risk survey on an industrial or commercial site: preparing the visit, observing methodically, asking the right questions, and reporting back with prioritised findings.

Key challenges

  • A successful risk survey rests on what the surveyor asked to see, not on what they were happy to be shown. The planned route is negotiated before arrival.
  • The heaviest risks are rarely in production: they are in plant rooms, intermediate storage areas, and zones where several companies work alongside each other.
  • A survey report listing a hundred observations without ranking them is never acted upon. Three well-argued priorities achieve more.

  • Prepare a risk survey: documentation, route, people to meet
  • Identify a site's main risks: fire, machinery, chemical, electrical, environmental
  • Locate the main applicable regulations and spot an apparent shortcoming
  • Observe and question without putting the person facing you at fault
  • Write a prioritised, actionable survey report

  1. 1The purpose and limits of a risk survey: what it observes and what it does not guarantee
  2. 2Preparation: drawings, processes, loss history, permits and authorisations
  3. 3Fire risk: fire load, compartmentation, firefighting means, access
  4. 4Machinery, electrical and energy risks: the useful points to observe
  5. 5Chemical and environmental risk: storage, containment, discharges, waste
  6. 6Organisation: permits, prevention plans, overlapping activities, subcontracting
  7. 7Conducting the survey: stance, surveyor safety, note-taking and photographs
  8. 8Prioritising findings and writing the report
  9. 9Verbal report-back to the site manager
  10. 10A practical visit on site, or on a documented photographic case

  • Prevention officers, safety coordinators and newly appointed QHSE managers
  • Inspectors and prevention officers of insurers and brokers
  • Consultants and auditors extending their scope to industrial risk

Prerequisites

  • General technical familiarity with industrial or commercial premises
  • No survey experience required

Learning methods

Three days face-to-face, including one day of practical survey work

Survey checklists by risk type provided to participants

Learning assessment

A survey report written after the practical day and assessed

A verbal report-back assessed on the prioritisation of findings

Scope of application

A methodological course. A risk survey is neither a statutory inspection, nor a periodic verification, nor a certification audit: it does not amount to a statement of compliance and does not make the surveyor answerable for the completeness of the risks present.
