What this course aims to achieve

Identifying and reducing risks on agricultural operations

Three days on the risks specific to farms: machinery, livestock, plant protection products, animal housing, storage and lone working. The course starts from real farm situations, not from a transposed industrial model.

Key challenges

  • On a farm the owner is employer, operator and often the only person present: prevention measures that assume a colleague nearby simply do not apply.
  • Serious accidents come less from major work than from daily routines: hitching, working on a running machine, restraining an animal.
  • Housing, children and visitors are inside the working area. Few prevention methods allow for that configuration.
  • Seasonality concentrates the risk: peak periods combine fatigue, untrained casual labour and equipment pushed to its limits.

  • Assess the risks of farm machinery and of maintenance work
  • Prevent animal, biological and animal-housing risks
  • Control the use and storage of plant protection products
  • Organise prevention for lone working and the raising of the alarm

  1. 1An overview of farm accident statistics and the most accident-prone situations
  2. 2Machinery and equipment: hitching, power take-off, drive shafts, lifting equipment
  3. 3Maintenance work: isolation, propping, working under a load
  4. 4Animal and biological risks: restraint, zoonoses, hygiene
  5. 5Animal housing: confined atmospheres, pits, fermentation gases, silos
  6. 6Plant protection products: storage, mixing, application, protective equipment
  7. 7Falls from height, manual handling, noise, vibration, sun exposure
  8. 8Lone working: means of raising the alarm, organisation, instructions
  9. 9Seasonal workers, apprentices and visitors: induction, instructions, supervision
  10. 10Building an action plan for one's own farm

  • Working on or advising a farm
  • No theoretical prerequisites

Three days, including a half-day observation visit on a farm

A prevention action plan produced for one's own farm

Analysis of a work situation presented to the group

Scope of application

Prevention obligations, agricultural social protection schemes and the certificates required to use plant protection products all vary by country. The course awards none of those certificates, nor authorisations to operate machinery, which are the subject of dedicated training and assessment.
