What this course aims to achieve

Master the specifics of energy auditing and conduct energy management system audits under ISO 50001

A five-day course on auditing energy management systems. It centres on what makes ISO 50001 distinctive: the energy review, energy performance indicators, and the evidence of continual improvement in that performance.

Key challenges

ISO 50001 is the only management system standard that requires improved results, not merely improved arrangements. An auditor used to ISO 9001 looks for procedures where kilowatt-hours are what must be found.
Falling consumption proves nothing if output has fallen too: without normalised indicators, the energy performance claimed cannot be audited.
Significant energy uses are often declared from a single global bill, with no sub-metering: the auditor must be able to spot an energy review built on estimates.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of ISO 50001 or experience of an energy management system
Technical fundamentals in energy: units, bills, metering

Five days face-to-face, working on anonymised real consumption data

Workshop calculation of indicators and normalisation

Written test on the interpretation of requirements and the normalisation of indicators

Assessment of audit conduct during role-plays

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: ISO 50001 for the requirements, ISO 19011 for audit guidelines, ISO 50015 and ISO 50006 for the measurement and verification of energy performance. The course is not a substitute for the statutory energy audit, which follows its own rules and requires separate qualifications.
