In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Prepare professionals working in the design, installation and maintenance of safety instrumented systems for the certification of their skills

Four days for professionals whose remit spans the design, installation and maintenance of safety instrumented systems. The course addresses the continuity between those three phases, which is where safety requirements are usually lost.

Key challenges

  • A correctly designed loop can be installed non-compliantly without anyone noticing: the safety level is lost during assembly and appears in no document.
  • Maintenance replaces a sensor with a model equivalent for the process but not for functional safety: the original calculation becomes invalid.
  • Temporary safety overrides applied during operation and never removed are the leading cause of silent degradation of an instrumented system.

Learning objectives

  • Locate one's role in the safety life cycle and its interfaces
  • Verify that an installation conforms to the safety requirements specification
  • Conduct acceptance testing of a safety instrumented function
  • Manage changes without degrading the safety level achieved
  • Organise proof testing and the traceability of overrides
  • Sit the competence certification examination

Detailed programme

  1. 1The safety life cycle: the phases and responsibilities within the design-install-maintain remit
  2. 2Reading and using a safety requirements specification
  3. 3Design principles: architectures, integrity levels, constraints
  4. 4Installation: conformity to the design file, wiring, power supply, channel separation
  5. 5Acceptance testing and validation before commissioning
  6. 6Maintenance: component equivalence, spare parts, records
  7. 7Change management and impact analysis on the safety level
  8. 8Overrides and derogations: procedure, duration, removal, traceability
  9. 9Proof testing: protocol, coverage, use of the results
  10. 10The certification examination

Target audience

  • Engineers and technical managers covering design, works and maintenance
  • Safety instrumentation project managers
  • Staff of engineering companies and system integrators

Prerequisites

  • Experience in instrumentation, automation or maintenance of safety systems
  • Higher technical qualification or equivalent experience

Learning methods

Four days face-to-face, working on anonymised real loop files

The certification examination held at the end of the session

Learning assessment

Analysis of a gap between specification and installation, presented to the group

Written competence certification examination

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: IEC 61508 and IEC 61511. Competence certification is awarded by the body administering the Quali-SIL scheme. The course does not amount to authorisation to work on any given installation, which remains the operator's decision.
