In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Prepare maintenance electricians of safety instrumented systems for the qualification of their specific skills

Three days for maintenance electricians working on safety instrumented systems. The course addresses what, in an ordinary electrical task, calls a safety function into question: channel separation, continuity of supplies, and the integrity of labelling.

Key challenges

  • Reusing a free cable route for a safety channel removes the independence of channels: the redundancy exists on the drawing and no longer in reality.
  • An untested backup supply is counted as a safeguard in the safety calculation. The electrician is the only person able to verify it.
  • Labelling that has faded or been redone from memory makes the next proof test unusable: the loop tested is no longer certainly the one in the protocol.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the circuits belonging to a safety instrumented function
  • Preserve the independence of channels during electrical work
  • Check the supplies and the associated backup arrangements
  • Maintain labelling and documentation once the work is complete
  • Combine electrical isolation with the safety override procedure

Detailed programme

  1. 1The safety instrumented function seen from the electrical side: sensors, actuators, supplies
  2. 2The notion of integrity level and the role of channel independence
  3. 3Routing, separation, screening and electromagnetic compatibility
  4. 4Supplies: continuity, backup, protection, testing
  5. 5Labelling and documentation: requirements and the consequences of a discrepancy
  6. 6Electrical isolation and safety override: two procedures to be combined
  7. 7Taking part in proof tests and the records expected
  8. 8Cases of electrical discrepancies that have degraded a safety level
  9. 9The qualification examination

Target audience

  • Maintenance electricians on industrial sites
  • Contractor electricians working on safety installations
  • Electrical team leaders in maintenance

Prerequisites

  • Working as an industrial maintenance electrician
  • Holding the electrical authorisations matching one's work

Learning methods

Three days face-to-face, with exercises on a cabinet and an instrumented safety loop

The qualification examination held at the end of the session

Learning assessment

Work on a loop assessed in practice, including labelling and documentation

Written qualification examination

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 for functional safety. The qualification is awarded by the body administering the Quali-SIL scheme. It is distinct from electrical authorisations, which remain issued by the employer and are still required for any work on electrical equipment.
