What this course aims to achieve

Prepare operations officers of safety instrumented systems for the certification of their skills in operating and monitoring SIS

Three days for operations supervisors who run and monitor installations fitted with safety instrumented systems. The course centres on decisions made while operating: what to do with a safety alarm, when to request an override, when to shut down.

Key challenges

  • A safety function that trips often ends up being treated as an operating nuisance. The operator works around it, and the safeguard no longer exists.
  • An override is a legitimate tool that has become routine: with no register and no time limit, an installation can run for months with several safeguards disabled.
  • The operations supervisor is the person who balances production against safety in real time, often alone and at night. The rule has to be known before the event.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the safety instrumented functions of one's installation and their purpose
  • Interpret a safety alarm or trip and decide how to proceed
  • Process an override request and follow it through to removal
  • Recognise the situations that require putting the installation into a safe state
  • Ensure the traceability of safety events during operation
  • Sit the competence certification examination

  1. 1The role of safety instrumented systems in controlling accident scenarios
  2. 2Reading the cause and effect matrix and the trip set points
  3. 3Alarm hierarchy: process alarm, safety alarm, trip
  4. 4What to do on a trip: diagnosis, restart, conditions
  5. 5Repeated trips: reporting, analysis, the ban on working around them
  6. 6Overrides: justified request, authorisation, compensatory measures, duration, removal
  7. 7Putting the installation into a safe state: decision criteria and shutdown
  8. 8Operating records and handover to the next shift
  9. 9Role-plays on a simulator or on a real cause and effect matrix
  10. 10The certification examination

  • Operations supervisors and shift leaders on industrial installations
  • Control room operators in the process industry
  • Production managers on hazardous sites

Prerequisites

  • Working in the operation or supervision of an industrial installation
  • Knowledge of the process being operated

Three days face-to-face, with operating role-plays

The certification examination held at the end of the session

Learning assessment

Operating decisions assessed during role-plays

Written competence certification examination

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, within the operation and maintenance phases. Competence certification is awarded by the body administering the Quali-SIL scheme. The installation's own operating instructions prevail in all circumstances over the general principles taught on the course.
