What this course aims to achieve

Prepare technicians responsible for the installation or maintenance of safety instrumented systems for the certification of their skills

Three days for technicians who install or maintain safety instrumented systems without being involved in their design. The course covers the practices and records that preserve the safety level defined upstream.

Key challenges

  • The technician never sees the calculation that set the safety level, yet any of their actions can invalidate it. Knowing what must not be changed without referring back is essential.
  • A proof test carried out without a protocol, or whose result is not recorded, is as good as not carried out: it is the record that holds the safety level.
  • A spare part found in the store and fitted because it works can degrade the loop: the exact part number is not an administrative detail.

Learning objectives

  • Recognise a safety instrumented function on an installation
  • Install or replace a component in accordance with the safety file
  • Carry out a proof test according to its protocol and record the result
  • Identify the situations that require referring back before acting
  • Comply with the override procedure and its removal

Detailed programme

  1. 1What a safety instrumented system is for and what distinguishes it from process control
  2. 2The notion of safety integrity level, without the calculations
  3. 3Reading the safety file: what the technician must find in it
  4. 4Installation: wiring, separation, power supply, labelling, conformity to the drawing
  5. 5Component replacement: equivalence, part numbers, documentation
  6. 6Proof testing: protocol, sequence, pass criteria, recording
  7. 7Overrides: request, authorisation, duration, removal, traceability
  8. 8Situations to escalate: recurring fault, deviation from the file, requested modification
  9. 9The certification examination

Target audience

  • Instrumentation installation and maintenance technicians
  • Contractor technicians working on safety systems
  • Maintenance staff on hazardous industrial sites

Prerequisites

  • Practical experience of industrial instrumentation maintenance or installation
  • No prior knowledge of functional safety required

Learning methods

Three days face-to-face, with exercises on a test bench or loop mock-up

The certification examination held at the end of the session

Learning assessment

Performance of a proof test with recording, assessed in practice

Written competence certification examination

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, within the installation and maintenance phases. Competence certification is awarded by the body administering the Quali-SIL scheme. It does not replace the authorisations required for the work itself, electrical authorisations in particular, nor the operator's work permit.
