In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

Acquire the techniques and posture of third-party auditing to conduct certification audits under ISO 9001

A five-day course for auditors acting on behalf of a certification body. It addresses what sets a certification audit apart from an internal audit: the mandate, the stance required, impartiality, and the consequences of a finding.

Key challenges

  • In an internal audit, a finding opens a discussion. In a certification audit it can suspend a certificate: the rigour required is not the same.
  • A third-party auditor is paid by the organisation being audited, through the certification body. Holding to impartiality in that configuration has to be learned.
  • A certification audit runs to a fixed clock: audit time is contractual, and a badly framed scope cannot be recovered on site.

Learning objectives

  • Locate the third-party auditor's role within the accreditation and certification chain
  • Frame the audit scope and duration according to the site and its headcount
  • Hold an impartial stance and manage pressure from the auditee
  • Qualify a finding while gauging its consequences for the certificate
  • Write a report the certification committee can act on

Detailed programme

  1. 1The chain of trust: accreditation, certification, surveillance — who answers for what
  2. 2The certification cycle: two-stage initial audit, surveillance audits, recertification
  3. 3Determining audit time and scope: multiple sites, outsourced activities
  4. 4Impartiality requirements and management of conflicts of interest
  5. 5Conducting the audit: opening meeting, evidence collection, closing meeting
  6. 6Qualifying non-conformities and their effect on the certification decision
  7. 7Difficult situations: a disagreeing auditee, unavailable evidence, scope drift
  8. 8The audit report and the file submitted to the certification committee
  9. 9Role-played certification audits with participants playing auditees

Target audience

  • Auditors recruited or mandated by a certification body
  • Experienced internal auditors moving towards third-party auditing
  • Quality consultants carrying out pre-certification audits

Prerequisites

  • Command of the requirements of ISO 9001:2015
  • Experience of internal auditing or of running a management system

Learning methods

Five days face-to-face, alternating input with role-plays that are filmed or observed

Company cases drawn from real audit situations

Learning assessment

Assessment of role-plays against an auditor competence grid

Written test on the qualification of findings

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: ISO 9001:2015, ISO 19011 and the requirements applicable to management system certification bodies. The actual qualification of a third-party auditor remains a decision of the certification body that mandates them, based on their experience and witnessed audits.
