In a nutshell

What this course aims to achieve

A 360° course to identify health, safety, security and environmental risks in your organisation - HSSE Cycle

A long programme of sixteen and a half days covering all four fields of health, safety, security and environment. It is designed to bring someone newly appointed to an HSE role to the point of holding the post single-handed in a medium-sized company.

Key challenges

  • A lone prevention officer has to cover four disciplines, none of which can be improvised, and report to a management team expecting priorities rather than an inventory.
  • The HSE function almost never has line authority over the people whose practices it must change. Everything rests on the ability to get others to decide.
  • The four fields regularly conflict: a door locked for security may be an emergency exit, and environmental containment can create a fall hazard.

Learning objectives

  • Carry out occupational risk assessment and produce its summary document
  • Build and steer an annual prevention plan and its indicators
  • Organise fire prevention and emergency preparedness
  • Identify the site's environmental obligations and organise their monitoring
  • Handle the security dimension: malicious acts, access control, protection of people
  • Investigate an accident and run the lessons-learned process
  • Get a management team to decide, and lead a network without line authority

Detailed programme

  1. 1The framework of the HSE role: responsibilities, delegations, internal and external contacts
  2. 2Occupational risk assessment: work units, method, documentation, updating
  3. 3Risks by family: mechanical, chemical, electrical, working at height, manual handling, noise
  4. 4Psychosocial risks and work organisation
  5. 5Fire prevention: assessment, equipment, evacuation arrangements, drills
  6. 6Emergency situations: alert, first aid, crisis team, internal emergency plan
  7. 7Environment: waste, water, air, noise, soil, operating permits
  8. 8Security: threat analysis, access control, protection of property and people
  9. 9Overlapping activities and outside companies: prevention plan, permits, induction
  10. 10Accidents and near misses: causal analysis, actions, effectiveness follow-up
  11. 11Indicators, dashboard and communication to management
  12. 12A project running throughout: an HSE diagnosis and action plan for one's own establishment
