What this course aims to achieve

Identify endocrine disruptors, their health impacts and prevention best practices

A one-day course on endocrine disruptors in the workplace: where they are found, why the usual dose-response reasoning does not apply to them, and which substitution and protection measures are realistic.

Key challenges

  • An endocrine disruptor can act at low dose and be less active at high dose. The usual reasoning that less product means less risk does not protect anyone.
  • The effects often appear in offspring or years after exposure: no signal comes back from the workplace to alert the employer.
  • These substances are scattered through ordinary products — plastics, resins, cosmetics, biocides, inks — and rarely identified as such on safety data sheets.

  • Define an endocrine disruptor and distinguish the levels of evidence
  • Spot the substances and uses concerned within one's organisation
  • Identify the most sensitive populations and windows of exposure
  • Build an action plan for substitution and exposure reduction

  5. 5Identifying them in the company: reading compositions, questioning suppliers
  6. 6Situations and populations to protect first, including pregnancy and breastfeeding
  7. 7Substitution: finding alternatives and checking against regrettable substitution
  8. 8Reducing exposure: process, ventilation, protection, hygiene
  9. 9Internal communication and dialogue with employee representatives

Prerequisites

  • A grounding in chemical risk prevention
  • No background in toxicology required

Scope of application

The regulatory framework on endocrine disruptors is partial and evolving: lists and identification criteria differ between legal texts, and a substance may be recognised under one framework and not another. The course sets out those differences; it does not supply a classification that can be relied on as authoritative.
