Identifying and reducing risks in hospital settings

A course built to order from the activities and organisation of the healthcare establishment concerned. It covers the occupational risks of care work, patient-related risks, and their interaction, in a setting that can never shut down.

Key challenges

  • A hospital can neither stop nor evacuate in the ordinary way: prevention measures designed for industry assume one or the other is possible.
  • The safety of the carer and that of the patient sometimes compete: a movement that is safer for the carer may be less comfortable, or even riskier, for the person being cared for.
  • Patient handling and violence towards staff are the two leading causes of sick leave in hospitals, and the two hardest to address by technical means alone.
  • Night work, rotating shifts and reduced staffing degrade every other prevention measure in place.

  7. 7Psychosocial risks, night work and shift organisation
  8. 8Fire and evacuation in a hospital: horizontal transfer, sheltering in place
  9. 9Overlapping activities with outside companies in an occupied site
  10. 10Building the establishment's action plan
