What this course aims to achieve

Build, steer and develop a laboratory's quality management system with a view to accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025

Three days on building and running the management system of a testing or calibration laboratory with accreditation in view. The course addresses the technical requirements specific to 17025: personnel competence, method validation, measurement uncertainty and metrological traceability.

Key challenges

  • A laboratory can have a faultless documented system and still fail accreditation on a badly built uncertainty budget: it is the technical part that decides.
  • Personnel competence is demonstrated by authorisation records per method and per operator, not by a general training plan.
  • An unvalidated in-house method invalidates every result produced with it, including those already issued to the laboratory's customers.

  3. 3Personnel competence: authorisation per method, supervision, maintenance of competence
  4. 4Equipment: calibration, intermediate checks, metrological traceability
  5. 5Selection, verification and validation of methods
  6. 6Measurement uncertainty: components, budget, expression of the result
  7. 7Ensuring the validity of results: control charts, interlaboratory comparisons
  8. 8Reporting of results, statements of conformity and the decision rule
  9. 9Nonconforming work, complaints, internal audits and management review
  10. 10Preparing for assessment: file, on-site visit, common findings

  • Quality managers of testing or calibration laboratories

  • Laboratories undertaking accreditation or a scope extension

Prerequisites

  • Working in a testing or calibration laboratory
  • Basic descriptive statistics useful for uncertainty calculation

Learning methods

Three days face-to-face, with uncertainty calculation exercises on the laboratory's own cases

Participants may bring a method to document during the session

Learning assessment

Construction of an uncertainty budget assessed by the trainer

Quiz on the requirements of the standard

Scope of application

Reference framework: ISO/IEC 17025, supplemented by the application documents of the accreditation body under which the laboratory falls. The course prepares for accreditation; it does not grant it, the decision resting with the accreditation body following on-site assessment.
