What this course aims to achieve

Master the key steps of a quality audit under ISO 9001 version 2015 and prepare for the auditor examination

A five-day programme preparing candidates for quality auditor competence certification. It covers ISO 9001:2015 read from an auditability standpoint and the audit techniques set out in ISO 19011, and concludes with the written certification examination.

Key challenges

  • A candidate can know ISO 9001 by heart and still fail the examination: what is assessed is the ability to write a finding that holds up, not the ability to recite the standard.
  • Confusing a non-conformity with an improvement opportunity costs a report its credibility: a poorly qualified finding is challenged by the auditee and then withdrawn.
  • Auditing a process without understanding what it is for produces documentary conformity that brings nothing to the organisation audited.

Learning objectives

  • Interpret the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 in terms of the evidence to be sought
  • Build a process-based audit plan proportionate to the organisation's risks
  • Conduct an audit interview that produces factual evidence rather than opinions
  • Qualify a finding and word it so that it cannot be dismissed
  • Sit the written auditor certification examination

  1. 1ISO 9001:2015 requirements, clause by clause, reviewed from an auditability standpoint
  2. 2Process approach and risk-based thinking: what the auditor must be able to verify
  3. 3ISO 19011 audit principles: independence, evidence-based approach, confidentiality
  4. 4Audit preparation: document review, audit plan, interview guide, sampling
  5. 5Conducting interviews: open questioning, evidence-seeking, handling deadlock
  6. 6Qualifying findings: major non-conformity, minor non-conformity, observation, improvement opportunity
  7. 7Writing the audit report and presenting it to the auditee's management
  8. 8Follow-up of corrective actions and audit closure
  9. 9Role-played audits on a case study running through the course, in pairs
  10. 10Written certification examination

  • Quality managers seeking certification of their auditor competence
  • Consultants supporting organisations towards ISO 9001 certification

Prerequisites

  • Prior knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and its vocabulary
  • Experience of an operating quality management system, desirable

Continuous assessment during role-played audits

Written certification examination at the end of the programme

Scope of application

Reference frameworks: ISO 9001:2015 for the requirements, ISO 19011 for audit guidelines. The course prepares candidates for the auditor competence certification examination; it does not itself award the certification, which is issued by the personnel certification body.
